Quick Mixed Box Mushroom Harvest

2021-10-21  /  5 min  /  669 words

I'm just making up like a mixed case for a customer. Just grabbing a grabbing some different mushrooms out of here. So, we have some gold oysters. And we're just making up one of those exotic mixes. It just has a variety of different strains that we harvest.

It could be a variety It could change from week to week or day to day just depending on what's going on in the grow room. And it'll just be a 5 or 6-lb just mixed case of all the varieties that we have available. Now, these are just some beach mushrooms. They're uh kind of just being grown out just to see what would happen, but this is a white variety. And it's uh definitely a little bit more mature than you usually see.

Usually you see the caps closed, but just to see what happens, we just let these ones grow. And these are just some more of the oyster mushrooms growing on the straw and the soybean hull. So, yeah, they're doing pretty good. These are like 8-lb bags. Uh they actually colonize a lot faster than the oak or not a lot faster, but usually like a couple days sooner.

So, yeah, we noticed that we got a lot of top growth, so we just put the bags in there without even folding them and just put some cuts on them just to hurry up and get them fruiting. Um but yeah, for the most part it turned out real well. We got a lot of a lot of mushrooms out of here yesterday. So, this is kind of just what's left over from our big harvest that we did yesterday. So, yeah, I'm just garnishing up box.

Um making it look presentable. Well, this is a lion's mane and this is uh an experiment, too. We grew it on the straw and soybean hull. And uh yeah, the lion's mane grows on straw. Um I definitely like how it looks on the oak better.

I prefer I believe it prefers the oak, but you can still get mushrooms off of straw if that's all that's available. Pretty cool to see lion's mane growing on something other than a hardwood. They just have uh nice-looking fruit bodies, real dense. This is the HE3. So, this is a really nice commercial lion's mane.

Again, I think it does better on the oak, but So, yeah, we have a 6-lb mushroom medley right there. And yeah, we just have what, four different strains in here? Blue, gold, lion's mane, and a beach mushroom. So, that'll be a nice nice little box for this customer. They're just getting one today, so figured I'd go in here and harvest it for them.

So, I'm just going to harvest uh whatever's left over from yesterday's harvest. So, we just have some more oyster mushrooms. Actually quite a bit of them in there. These are super super tough in the bag. So, yeah, notice the debris on here.

I feel like with the straw substrate, it pulls a little bit more substrate with the mushrooms than I'm normally used to, but so that's a require a little bit more cleaning. I guess it depends on the strain, too. Let's see, this is the Nevada oyster. So, yeah, that one block already produced Okay, that's like 2 and 1/2 lbs mushrooms. So, I'm weighing these out to 3.5 lbs just cuz the oysters are they take up more volume per case than like a lion's mane or a shiitake.

So, to avoid like cramming them in there too tight, we just make sure we weigh them out at 3 and 1/2. And yeah, we have a nice little little oyster case. And I'll just throw a piece of wax paper right on top of it and that helps prevent the mushrooms from drying out and kind of preserves them a little bit a little bit more. Gives them an extra layer of protection. So.
